Dog Training Tips

Please note: These are very general guidelines. The training needs of dogs vary according to their individual needs. For a better understanding of your dog's needs please seek out a reputable canine training school in your area.

  • Always do your research when choosing a pet. Make sure the breed matches your family's lifestyle.

  • Striking a dog is NEVER a solution to a problem and only leads to more problems.

  • Set up the rules and stick to them. For example: If you don't want your dog to jump up on other people don't let him jump up on you and your family.

  • Dogs live by a pack order. Establish yourself as your dog's leader.

  • Let your tone of voice be your dogs guide to correct behavior.
    • Use a low-pitched tone of voice to convey correction. It is not necessary to yell to convey your message.
    • Use a normal tone of voice when giving a command.
    • Use a high-pitched tone of voice to convey praise.

  • Use "NO" as your correction word, such as, "No bite"," No chew" etc..., then praise as soon as they stop the unwanted behavior. Please note: dogs must be corrected and praised at the time of the incident!

  • Other tools that can be used for unwanted behaviors: Bitter Apple spray & paste and shaker can with coins. Please consult a professional for proper usage.

  • Exercise, exercise, exercise is a deterrent to behavioral problems.
