Take these steps to train and interact with your dog, and enjoy the love and companionship that will surely follow! - Dogs really do appreciate rules that are enforced consistently, humanely and calmly. You should establish rules that you continue with - making a dog sit for a treat is a god way of reminding him or her that you are the top dog!
- Praise your dog when he or she does something good - like chewing one of his or her toys. When a dog is behaving badly or bothering you for attention, ignore him or her or simply leave the room. Your dog naturally seeks praise, so he or she will strive to be good!
- Never allow a dog to think that it is ok or fun to bite. You must say "No!" every time the dog attempts to bite - even if it is only "play" biting.
Never approach a strange dog unless an adult is supervising and always ask first before petting a strange dog.
- Respect an animal's privacy. Never bother an animal who is eating, drinking or sleeping. A dog's sleeping space, toys and food should all be respected as well - teach your younger siblings to leave these items alone.
- Never stare into a dog's eyes. This is interpreted by the dog to be an act of aggression.
