The National Humane Education Society (NHES) is currently offering free humane education programs for schools, churches, clubs, libraries and other venues serving children within the tri-state area of our West Virginia-based national office.
How far in advance should I make a request? Due to travel considerations, requests should be made at least 2 weeks in advance for venues located within two hours of NHES, and 1.5 months in advance for venues more than two hours from NHES. The NHES national office is located in Charles Town, WV. How long are the NHES Education Programs and what do they include? Programs average 30-60 minutes and may include a fun warm-up activity, discussion and film, and application of the information shared. Programs often commence with a visit from a friendly Briggs Animal Adoption Center (BAAC) dog and may occasionally include a live educational puppetry show. What education topics are covered? Education topics include basic animal needs and care, proper pet handling and approach, kindness and responsibility, and animal-related careers. Accommodations can be made to cover other areas of interest. What age-level does NHES offer programs for? NHES programs are best suited for children in 3rd grade and older; however, programs are available for PreK - 2nd grades. What size audience and venue can NHES accommodate? Audiences with a minimum of 20 and maximum of 250 children per program are preferred. The programs are suitable for most environments from the intimate classroom to the gymnasium assembly. Multiple programs and larger audiences are greatly encouraged for venues more than two hours from NHES. Does NHES offer education for adults? Yes! Occasionally, the Education Department fulfills guest-speaker requests on various animal welfare issues. NHES also holds the “Violence Prevention & Intervention: How to Help Animals and Children” conference in a different national venue each year.
