Cats May Keep Their Claws

Paws Up!

To the Los Angeles City Council for recommending banning cat declawing within city limits.

According to a news source, “The Los Angeles City Council’s Public Safety Committee voted unanimously…to recommend that City Atty. Carmen Trutanich draft an ordinance banning cat declawing within city limits.”

Cat declawing is an unnecessary surgery performed to correct unwanted behavior in companion animals. The surgery involves the removal of the first joint of each of the cat’s toes. The United States and Canada are the only countries where declawing is commonplace.

Take Action: Los Angeles City residents, please send a polite note to City Attorney Trutanich supporting the ban on declawing cats.

Ditch the Product Testing

Paws Up!

To a University of Toledo professor for researching alternatives to animals used in laboratory testing.

According to news sources, Akira Takashima, professor and chair, Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, “received a $1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health…to create a three-dimensional skin replica that would eliminate the need to use lab animals for toxicology testing.” Such testing is usually done on “products such as lotions, soaps and ointments.”

NHES opposes the use of animals in testing and developing cosmetics, soaps, and household products, because such testing is inherently cruel when viable alternatives exist. We are sincerely grateful to Professor Takashima for working to eliminate cruel animal testing at the University of Toledo.

Take Action: Please write a letter to Dr. Takashima thanking him for his work in relieving lab animals from the horrors of product testing.
