    Grade 5-6 Essay

Students were to submit an essay of 200 words or less addressing the following scenario:

You have just learned that a circus, which is know for cruelty to its animal performers, is coming to your town.  Write to your town council members and ask them to pass a town ban on animal performances.

    Grade 5

    Dear Town Council Members,

I strongly feel that any circus or cruelty to animal performers be ban from this town.  I feel this way because, in my opinion, animals should be treated with as much respect as possible.  The Geary Elementary Middle School motto is “Treat others the way you wanted to be treated”.  I believe the same should go for animals.

Ever since I was little, I’ve wanted to be involved in preventing animal cruelty.  Even if I were to save only one dog or cat, I think it would still make a difference to the world.  I also think that anyone caught treating an animal badly should be arrested.

It has come to my attention, that more and more animals are being mistreated.  I encourage people to want to help animals instead of hurting them.  Anyone who joins an Animal Rescue Center should know they’re making the world a better place.

Please help me make a difference in the world.  Make the right decision and choose to help animals, not hurt them.

                                        Thanks,

                                                    Melissa Ashman

    Dear Town Council Members,

It has come to my attention that some circuses have been cruel to their animals.  Some people have mistreated them.  I think they should be treated just as people are.

I would like to have a ban put up to keep cruel pet performances out of our town.  The reason is that we influence our town.  What if people from a different town started saying that the people here are cruel to animals?  That just isn’t true!

It would be really nice if we could stop cruel pet performances.  Cruelty is VERY bad!  Animals don’t deserve to be treated like that.  I hope that one day all people will stop and realize how special their pets are to them.

    Grade 7-9 Essay

Students were to submit an essay of 500 words or less addressing the following scenario:

Write to a consumer products company to let them know that you will not be purchasing their product(s) until they declare a permanent ban on animal testing.  (Students were provided a list of example companies to write).

    Dear Johnson & Johnson,

I have some complaints about the way you test all of your products on poor innocent animals who have done nothing cruel to you.  Yet you insist on torturing and using sometimes painful products on them.  How would you feel if you were in these animals perdiciments?  I have a little sister who is 8 years old and when she reads your product that state “Animal tested,” she asks if it’s true that you use these shampoo products or soap products on poor little harmless animals.  So please Stop using inocent animals for your products.  If needed you should try them on yourselves.  If this rude method continues, I will refuse to buy your products and I will encourage others to do the same.  Thank you for listening to my complaints.  You will not here the last of me!

    I have a lawyer!

                            Sincerely,

                                        Stephani Smith

    Ashley Coleman

    Grade 8

    Dear Johnson & Johnson,

I am writing to tell you my opinion of your testing on animals.  Don’t get me wrong, I buy your products all the time, but I think you should not test on animals because animal cruelty is wrong.  You may not think animals have feelings but in fact they do.  How would you feel if we tested products on you, I know you would definately change your mind on animal testing.  Your companies kill more animals a year, than they can produce.  If you test animals, they die, then eventually they will stop producing.  There are many reasons why animal cruelty is wrong.  Animals are precious creatures that we should be thankful for.  I have pets and I love them and just thinking about them being testing on makes me think about all the other animals that are being tested on.  I know you probably don’t think that you can make a difference, but you can.  Think about if, if your company quits it may encourage other companies to do the same.  I know for a fact that all my family and friends will quit purchasing all products, until you quit testing on animals.  Please take these words into consideration, and you may see what I mean.  If you deny my request, I can guarantee that I shall not give up until I get my wish.  Thanks for your time.
