    2007 Winners

Congratulations to the 2007 NHES Essay Contest winners!

We would like to thank all of the students who participated for their wonderful and encouraging letters promoting the humane treatment of animals.

    3-5 Grade

You have just learned that a circus, which is known for cruelty to its animal performers, is coming to your town.  Write to your town council members and ask them to pass a town ban on animal performances.

    First Place

    Megan Quandt

    Grade 3

    Dear Town Council Members:

My name is Megan and I am writing about a circus that is coming in town and they are known for their cruelty to their animals.  Please do not allow this circus in our fine town because these animals deserve respect just like us!  Making these animals do these unusual tricks is really not part of their real life.  Please pass a ban on these traveling animal circus performances.  Thank you for listening to me.

    7-9 Grade

Write to a consumer products company to let them know that you will not be purchasing their product(s) until they declare a permanent ban on animal testing.

    First Place

    Jacki Cook

    Grade 9

“50%, 17-12 million, 2,567,713, 61%, and 100 million.  From a business stand point, these numbers are exceptionally good but now here are these same numbers again . . .”

Jackie opened with an attention-grabber about the cruel, hard numbers of animal product testing!  She urged the Johnson & Johnson company to consider the pain and suffering laboratory animals feel, and closed her letter with a steadfast vow not purchase products tested on animals.

    10-12 Grade

Write to a consumer products company to let them know that you will not be purchasing their product(s) until they declare a permanent ban on animal testing.

    First Place

    Hannah Herdt

    Grade 10

“Animals are living creatures that feel pain just like the rest of us and I’m sure they would never consent to such treatment.”

This young activist passionately urged the Proctor & Gamble company to use humane (and more accurate) computer technology instead of cruel animal tests for product testing.  Hannah signed off her letter with the promise to encourage all her friends and family to avoid purchasing from companies that test on animals!
