    June - The Slitherers!

Are Snakes More Than Just Creepy Critters?

    Find Out More Here!

Why do snakes slither? Snakes use hundreds of vertebrae, ribs, and scales to slither around their environment.  The scales grip the edges of different surfaces to move the snake forward, while the vertebrae and ribs allow for increased flexibility and movement.

There are more than 2,700 species of snakes spread across every continent in the world with the exception of Antarctica.  They range from just 10 cm long to 17 feet in length!

Some snakes lay eggs like birds!  However, unlike bird eggs, snake eggs are soft.

Snakes are carnivores, meaning they eat meat, and are cold-blooded, which means that their inner temperature varies with the environment.

Although snakes do not have ears, they can still hear you!  Sound waves hit their skin, and are transferred from their muscles to their ear bones, where it triggers a response in their brains.

Snakes have a very interesting way to smell the world! They can smell through their nostrils just like humans, but also through their tongues.  When you see a snake flick his tongue out, he’s actually trying to find out more about his environment!
