Federal House Judiciary Committee Passes HB 6598

    Paws Up!

To the Federal House Judiciary Committee for verbally passing the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2008.

Although horse slaughter has been banned in the United States, horses are still being transported across borders to Canada and Mexico for slaughter. This bill (H.R. 6598) will end the shipment of horses to foreign countries for slaughter. Specifically, H.R. 6598 will make it illegal to possess, ship, transport, sell, deliver, or receive any horse with the intent that it will be slaughtered for human consumption.

This is great news for horses, but they are not in the clear just yet.  Now is the time for action!  If members representing your state are on the Committee, contact them and urge them to vote yes on H.R. 6598.  Once this bill passes the Committee, it can move to the House floor for a vote.

Read an update on H.R. 6598 in our October '08 Action Letters section.

Florida Manatees Rescued from Drainage Pipe

    Paws Up!

NHES is very thankful for these important and kind efforts to help protect and preserve the West Indian manatees of Florida!

The gentle, giant manatee faces many serious threats to its survival along the Florida coast; pollution, habitat loss, and boat-incurred injuries and diver harassment to name a few have greatly harmed the species as a whole.  Currently, the manatee is federally classified as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and needs our continued protection.

In the spirit of those kind folks who helped the stranded manatees, please take action to help all manatees of Florida!  Write the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) urging continued strong protections for the West Indian manatees of Florida.  Ask the commission to ensure that private development interests will not supercede vital manatee protections and habitats.
