CA & MA Vote in Favor of Animals

    Paws Up!

To California and Massachusetts citizens for voting in favor of animal protections this election season.

California - Proposition 2, The Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act

This vital act puts an end to some of the worst abuses that take place in California’s factory farms—specifically the severe, lifelong confinement of farmed animals. Under Proposition 2, these animals should be able to stand up, lie down, turn around, and extend their legs or wings. This important piece of legislation affirms that all animals deserve humane treatment, including those raised for food. It also improves human health by eliminating the possibility that a sick animal will be confined with healthy animals, spreading diseases that humans may be exposed to.

The California ballot proposition passed with 63% of votes in favor of it. Farmers have until 2015 to implement the new space requirements for their animals. NHES has been a proud Proposition 2 campaign supporter and is one of the 150 animal protection charities that endorsed the act.

Massachusetts - Question 3, The Greyound Protection Act

On November 4, 2008, the voters of Massachusetts voted overwhelmingly in favor of Question 3 (56 to 44 percent) to phase out commercial dog racing by 2010.

Question 3 states, “The citizens of Massachusetts find that commercial dog racing is cruel and inhumane, and as recommended by the Humane Society of the United States, the Animal Rescue League of Boston, GREY2K USA, and the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, declare that it should be prohibited in the commonwealth.”

NHES is pleased that the citizens of Massachusetts have voted for the animals!  This leaves only ten states left that still host this failing industry.  An estimated 5 – 9,000 dogs bred for the racetrack are destroyed annually; others are sold to medical research laboratories when their racing days are done.  Dogs are often given performance enhancing and pain masking drugs to keep them on the track.  These and other abuses will cease when greyhound racing is outlawed in all 50 states.

Take Action!  Click here to learn which states still permit greyhound racing, and if yours is one of them, contact your representatives to share your displeasure with state-sanctioned dog racing.

You can also help by not attending or betting on any dog racing events or watching them on television.

    National Media Covers Vegetarian Options

    Paws Up!

To the Wall Street Journal for their story “Any Way You Slice It, It’s Not Turkey” in the November 13, 2008, Life and Style section.

The Wall Street Journal writes that “anyone can wield the power of the president—to pardon a Thanksgiving Day turkey…Vegetarians do it all the time.”  The article invites the reader to investigate turkey substitutes and identifies food stores where you can buy them.

NHES advocates a vegetarian lifestyle for both humane and health considerations.  Eating less meat is kinder to animals and to the environment.  And eating vegetarian is fun and easy!  NHES founder, Mrs. Anna C. Briggs, has been a vegetarian for over eight decades.  In honor of her 80-plus years of vegetarianism, we invite you to join us in sharing a meat-free holiday.  Save a turkey this Thanksgiving, and fill your table with vegetarian dishes—together, we can make the world a more humane place for all animals.

Read the article, then be sure to thank the Wall Street Journal and the writer, Beth Decarbo, for running the story at:
