March 2009 Factory Farming Ain’t Pretty Paws Up! To HBO for airing a documentary called “Death on a Factory Farm” beginning March 16. An undercover investigator’s work at a hog farm in Ohio resulted in ten charges of animal cruelty being brought against the farm’s owner, his son, and an employee. The investigator’s work also resulted in a documentary called “Death on a Factory Farm” that addresses the lack of legal protection for animals caught up in the factory farm system. Along with graphic scenes from the hog farm, producers Tom Simon and Sarah Teale included scenes from the trial of the defendants. Just as with HBO’s documentary “Dealing Dogs,” about the dark reality of Class B dealers and the research industry, NHES anticipates “Death on a Factory Farm” will be revealing, compelling, and will inspire more people to consider the welfare of animals in their daily choices. Take Action! HBO will air the documentary beginning March 16 through April 1 at selected times. Watch the film with family, friends, and colleagues and start a conversation about what each of you can do to speak for those who cannot. Make the gathering a celebration of saving animals by offering vegetarian snacks! Source: www.hbo.com/docs/programs/deathfactoryfarm/index.html # Save the Seals Paws Up! To the European Parliament for considering a ban on Canadian seal products. The European Parliament’s Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee endorsed a bill that would impose a ban on the import of all seal products to the 27-member union. The full Parliament is to vote on the ban April 1 in Brussels. Internal Market Committee chair Arlene McCarthy (PES, UK) said, “A clear majority of citizens across the European Union are horrified by the cruel clubbing to death of thousands of seals every year. They do not want these products on sale in the EU and today the Internal Market Committee has backed citizens’ demands for a ban.” Take Action! Please send a note to the European Parliament and its President, Mr. Hans-Gert Pottering, expressing your support of the ban.
