    A Spring For All

As the old adage states, April showers bring May flowers, and so it goes at the offices of the National Humane Education Society (NHES) and its program, the Briggs Animal Adoption Center (BAAC).

Pear trees along our drive blossom a beautiful, soft white. Flowers lining the building front open to pink, purple and gold. Industrious robins and sparrows sing gaily as they build nests once again along our center’s exterior and natural foliage. We can just imagine the small rabbits and wild mice moving about our open fields as they prepare for a new litter of babes. And very soon, deer young and old, will mingle among these docile creatures.

Spring is truly a wonderful time of year for us. Our animal adoption center not only provides a safe haven to hundreds of needy cats and dogs throughout the year, but also provides a welcoming home to a variety of local wildlife. We can take a deep breath of satisfaction, wonder, and gratitude for the many exciting beginnings and happy endings that happen right here at our center.

Yet, as we take this deep breath and enjoy the fresh spring air, we can’t help but reflect that not all animals are so fortunate. Many deserving creatures never feel the warmth of the spring sunrise on their faces or enjoy a drink from a cool puddle of new rain. They do not forage emerging grasses and berries or enjoy the rewards of a tough hunt. Tragically, countless sentient creatures will be born this spring to barely, if at all, know the loving companionship of their own kind.

Mice, rabbits, guinea pigs, and monkeys subjected to merciless research. . .

Cats, dogs, ferrets, and even parrots forced to breed heinously beyond their

     natural capacity. . .

Panthers, bears, apes, and wolves chained as “pets” in dark basements and garages. . .

Fowl birds, pigs, cows, and many other farm animals born into terrible darkness that ends only with a savage death. . .

In these moments of heart-churning reflection, we at NHES—and humane and caring persons everywhere—must remember to keep breathing. Remember to take solace in the many victories gained across our nation each day for animals. Breathe the invigorating April air, listen to the birds’ song, pet a dog on his or her way to a new home, or enjoy the soft nudge of rescued cow waiting for a treat.

This time of the year is truly wonderful for NHES and animal advocates everywhere. We take a peaceful moment for animals and then we get back to work, so that one day, there will be a spring for all.
