    Turkey Justice

    Paws Up!

To the prosecuting attorney’s office and the judge in the first ever successful prosecution of animal abuse of farmed turkeys.

Lewisburg, WV, Prosecuting Attorneys R. Kevin Hanson and Ryan R. Blake brought charges against three defendants for animal cruelty. Two of the defendants were convicted and sentenced by Judge James Roe. The third defendant is scheduled for trial in August.

Poultry are not protected under the Animal Welfare Act. Therefore, rarely has there been a case brought against anyone for cruelty to these sentient beings and never has anyone been convicted of such cruelty until now.

Take Action: West Virginia residents, please contact the prosecuting attorney’s office and the judge thanking them for seeing that justice was done.

    Sheep Win

    Paws Up!

To the Jiang Sunshine Company of China for demanding Australian wool growers abandon the practice of mulesing*.

According to news reports, Cao Xiuming, Director of Technology Center for Sunshine said, “In the last three years, increasing requests have been made from our major international customers to provide product as made from non-mulesed Australian wool due to the strong pressure of the animal liberation movement.”

Cao Xiuming continued, “Being a principal Australian wool user, we urge the Australian wool industry to recognise this fact and adopt practices which will ultimately satisfy the needs from its customers.”

Take Action: Send a note to the Jiang Sunshine Company expressing your pleasure at their decision to demand that Australian wool growers abandon the practice of mulesing.

*Mulesing is the practice of cutting strips of flesh off the backs of the sheep’s legs and hind regions to create smooth skin so that urine and feces cannot adhere to their wool. This is done without anesthesia.

    Sparing Turtle Lives

    Paws Up!

To the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for protecting Florida freshwater turtles from commercial harvesting.

According to news sources, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) “has banned commercial harvesting of all freshwater turtles in the state.” A recent study by the FWC “provided enough data for the FWC to determine action was necessary.”

Individuals may still take one turtle a day but not for commercial use, and only one turtle at a time can be transported. Commercial turtle farmers will have until 2011 to continue harvesting turtles before they can no longer take wild turtles to restock their farm populations.

Take Action: Florida residents, contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and thank them for protecting Florida’s wild turtles!
