    July 2009

    Horses Die

    Paws Down!

To the organizers and sponsors of the Omak Suicide Race.

During the Omak Stampede, a rodeo held in eastern Washington the first week in August, the Omak Suicide Race takes place. The race consists of three legs: first, riders force their horses to plunge over an almost vertical drop of about 225 feet. Once over the cliff, they then force them into the swift current of the Okanogan. Finally, after many horses have sustained life-threatening injuries, they are forced to sprint uphill about 500 yards. Some horses have to be euthanized due to their injuries; others live on with crippling injuries both physical and psychological. River State

Sponsors of the Omak Stampede try to disassociate themselves from the Suicide Race; however, publicity for the race includes it as an event of the Stampede.

Take Action: Please write to the Omak race board and urge them to remove the Suicide Race from the Stampede’s events. Also, write to the sponsors to indicate your displeasure in their supporting an event that results in injury and death to horses.
