August 2009 – Local Boy Scout Builds Bridge for Animals

Bryan and scouts at work on the early stages of the footbridge.

The staff and animals at the BAAC would like to thank Bryan Joyce, a scout from Troop 15 of Stephens City, Virginia, for building a footbridge at our facility! This bridge connects an exterior walkway to one of the many play yards, used by volunteers and staff for exercising the dogs currently living at the facility.

Bryan is 16 years old, and entering the 11th grade. He has been a scout since the age of 6! He credits his father, friends, and fellow troop members for enabling him to finish this project--the final service project required for him to earn the rank of Eagle-in a timely fashion. Winchester Home Pros, his father's company, was able to make most of the materials and tools available to Bryan and his fellow bridge-builders, brining a project that would have cost close to $6,700 down to only $2,515.BAAC Adoption Supervisor, Karen Snapp, and canine adoptable, Toby, enjoy the new walk.

This footbridge was a long-needed addition to the BAAC facility, as it crosses a ditch, which often fills with water and mud, separating the facility from this enormous play yard. The dogs, staff, and volunteers much appreciate their dry feet during damp weather!

The Joyce family has long been active in animal rescue as well as community service-they currently foster dogs and puppies for the SPCA, and Bryan has participated in many community beautification projects. We are grateful to Bryan and friends, and are confident he will do very important work in the future!
