September 2009 Tigers Left to Languish Paws Down! To the government of Mexico for aborting the rescue of tigers in Cancun. According to reports, the Mexican government was set to release a number of ill and injured tigers to a rescue group in the United States. On September 3, 2009, just days prior to the release, the Mexican government aborted the rescue efforts. Following the devastation of Hurricane Wilma in 2005, the tigers have been languishing in cages for nearly five years in the decimated remains of a restaurant where they had once been “entertainment” for the patrons. The owner of the restaurant continues to feed the big cats whenever he can, but is not able to give them any other assistance. In August 2008, the Mexican government began working with rescue organizations in the U.S. and Mexico for the safe release of these tigers. However, the government has now reneged on its agreement without giving any explanation. Take Action: Please write to the Mexico Ambassador to the United States, urging him to request the Mexican government continue their plans for the immediate release of these animals to the agreed-upon animal rescue organizations. To South Point Hotel for bringing bull fighting to Las Vegas. According to news sources, South Point Hotel contracted with Don Bull Productions to bring “bloodless” bullfighting to Las Vegas. Pedro Haces, head of Don Bull Productions, is quoted as saying, “We’re exporting bullfighting, which is an art, and the bullfighters are artists. I want the public all over the world to know and learn what this is.” Bullfighting is not an art; it’s a cruel and indefensible form of animal abuse. Although the bulls in the Las Vegas show will not be sacrificed, they are still being made subjects of an inhumane spectacle. Take Action: Please write a polite letter to Michael Gaughan at South Point Hotel requesting that the hotel no longer serve as a venue for bullfighting, bloodless or otherwise.
