October 2009 Quebec to Protect Puppies Paws Up! To the province of Quebec for getting serious about shutting down puppy mills. According to news reports, “The Quebec government has announced a series of measures aimed at curbing its reputation as the puppy mill capital of North America.” These measures include hiring additional inspectors, improving shelter facilities, establishing standards of pet care, and increasing fines for animal abuse. Puppy mills are breeding grounds of despair. Females are bred over and over again until they are spent. Their puppies grow up in filth and disease. They live in dark, unheated, and cramped spaces with little food, water, or human contact. Unsuspecting individuals who buy puppies from pet shops don’t realize the horror these animals have experienced in their young lives. Take Action: Please write the premier of Quebec thanking him for his province’s intention to shut down puppy mills. To the Michigan legislature for enacting and to Governor Granholm for signing into law HB 5127 that eliminates the worst of factory farming practices. Michigan has now joined other states in banning some of the worst practices of factory farming. Specifically, the Michigan law will eliminate battery cages for egg laying hens, gestation crates for pregnant sows, and tie stalls for veal calves. Similar to California’s Proposition 2, this new law allows for a phase-out period for farms to rid themselves of inhumane husbandry practices. Battery cages leave laying hens little space in which to move around, preen, or spread their wings. Gestation crates are no larger than the sow herself leaving her no room to move. Tie stalls in veal crates confine male calves, the offspring of dairy cows, in an area no larger than they are and prevent them from turning around or lying down comfortably. Take Action: Michigan residents, please write a thank-you letter to Governor Jennifer Granholm for signing this very important piece of legislation into law. Urge her to encourage Michigan farms to phase-out the cruel confinement practices banned by HB 5127 as quickly as possible. Governor Jennifer M. Granholm P.O.
