    March – The Curious

These animals are intelligent and curious about their surroundings.

Who are they? Let’s find out!

Goats are members of the Bovidae family and are very closely related to sheep. There are more than 300 different breeds of goat! Female goats are called does or nannies, while male goats are called bucks or billies. Baby goats are called kids.

Like sheep and cows, goats are ruminants, meaning they are herbivores who have four-chambered stomachs. That noise they make when they speak? It’s called bleating!

Both male and female goats have beards and many breeds of goat have wattles, the flaps of skin that hang down on either side of their necks. Most goats only have two horns, but some are hornless while others have as many as eight horns!

One rumor about goats—they will eat anything—is somewhat true. Goats are very intelligent and extremely curious about their world. They will taste just about anything to see if it is a tasty treat. Most times, they do not actually eat tin cans and cardboard—they’re just curious about it. Goats actually prefer to eat the tips from shrubs, trees, and some plants.

Goats are more agile than some people think. They can climb and balance in places most other ruminants stay away from, such as rocks and cliffs. Some have even been known to climb trees, if the angle is right!
