    May – The History-Makers

Who was around during the dinosaur age? Let’s find out!

Sharks date back to the dinosaur age and may even have been swimming the oceans before the age of dinosaurs—wow! There are approximately 400 species of sharks, and some have been evolving for millions of years.

Sharks don’t have any bones; their body is made up of cartilage, not unlike the cartilage that forms your ears or can be found at the tip of your nose.

Most sharks live for 20 to 30 years, but some can live more than 100 years! During their lifetime, sharks can cover millions of miles and can be found in every ocean on the planet. Some species swim at speeds of 5 mph, but when chasing or being chased, can reach speeds of over 10 mph. Other species have been known to reach 30 mph in short bursts.

While a few shark species are lone hunters, most species roam the ocean waters in schools as large as 100 sharks.

The great white and hammerhead are two of the most well-known members of the shark family. They are at the top of the oceanic food chain. The whale shark is the biggest fish in the sea but eats the smallest creatures—plankton. Still, on that diet, the whale shark can grow to be the size of a school bus!
