NHES joins forces with the Network for Endangered Sea Turtles (N.E.S.T) to help rescue and rehabilitate injured sea turtles on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. NHES began supporting N.E.S.T. about 3 years ago and more recently provided funds to help with the continued rehabilitation of “Finn,” an injured Kemp Ridley turtle.

Finn is a Kemp’s Ridley turtle, the world’s most endangered species of sea turtle! In fact, Finn is one of only about 1,000 wild, female Kemp Ridley turtles in existence. When a species is this rare, the life of every animal is imperative to the survival of the species. NHES proudly supports N.E.S.T.’s work to save lives and conserve the world’s rarest turtles by rehabilitating and re-releasing turtles like Finn.

When Finn was initially rescued, she was suffering from a puncture wound to her head and a broken flipper that was fractured in three places. N.E.S.T veterinarians installed an external fixator to hold her flipper together as the bone refuses. Her head injury is healing slowly, and her shell fracture is completely healed! Now she is eating fresh seafood and learning to swim again as her fin heals. With any luck, Finn could soon be back in the ocean waters off the coast of North Carolina where she belongs.
