      Companion Animals

Being well-informed on issues surrounding animals and their circumstances helps each of us to more likely treat and respect them as living, breathing, sentient beings. As we learn more about these other members of the animal kingdom, for we are members of the animal kingdom too, we are better able to make decisions regarding our responsibilities toward them, their care, and their protection.

Aging, Loss, Bereavement, Renewal Companion Animal Death and Grief

Breaking Hearts Why Owners Relinquish Companion Animals
"Sadly, many thousands of companion animals are relinquished by their owners yearly to animal shelters nationwide. Not only do these animals lose their homes, their place of comfort and familiarity, but many will never knkow another home again..."

Breeding Grounds of Death and Despair Puppy Mills
"Puppy mills can house anywhere from 50 dogs to over 1,000. The breeding dogs live in cramped, dark, filthy conditions. The puppies often suffer from a variety of diseases..."

Canine Plastic Surgery Cropping Ears and Docking Tails
"Often, a dog undergoes ear cropping and tail docking surgeries to meet a specific standard or to make the dog appear larger and menacing. Cosmetic and breed standards are not acceptable reasons to crop ears or dock tails..."

Designer Animals Human Manipulation of Animal Breeds

Finding Love in All the Right Places Adopting from a Shelter or Rescue
"Too many healthy, adoptable animals are euthanized in our nation's shelters every year while puppy mills and backyard breeders continue to crank out huge numbers of animals..."

Good Dogs, Bad Raps Breed Bans
"Breed specific legislation does not work. Sentencing all members of a particular breed does not end dog bites in a community. Dangerous dogs come in all sizes, shapes, and pure and mixed breeds..."

A New Addition Preparing for a New Companion Animal
"Choose wisely when bringing a companion animal into your home. Make sure everyone in the family is ready for the arrival and accepts his or her role in keeping the animal happy and healthy..."

On the Road Traveling with Your Companion Animal
"Regardless of the means of transportation, there are some basic considerations you should be aware of before you embark on your trip with your companion animal..."

    Safety First Companion Animal Safety
"Be prepared before you have a crisis. Make sure you have your animal's vaccinations and medical records up-to-date. If you think of your animal as the equivalent of a two-year-old human child, you will be more apt to prevent accidents and injury..."

Saving Lives Rescuing Stray Cats and Dogs
