Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission—to be of service to them whenever they require it. St. Francis of Assisi Dear Friends,
Anna C. Briggs wrote For the Love of Animals* in 1990 to educate readers about the great problems our nation and the world were facing regarding the treatment of animals, the planet, and each other. Her story is one of compassion, caring, and concern for all of God’s creatures. We at NHES would like to share with you her powerful and heartfelt words. This is your opportunity to read the dynamic and dramatic story of Anna C. Briggs and the creation of The National Humane Education Society (NHES). We hope you enjoy the story Anna tells and the challenge she puts to each one of us to love animals. The first chapter sets the tone for the entire book. Titled “The Importance of a Single Starfish,” it begins simply: “In a deserted alleyway, a young dog hunts for food, pawing through garbage cans for any scrap that might keep hunger—and starvation—at bay. Dropped by careless owners by the side of a highway when he became ‘too much trouble,’ the dog is fighting to survive.” To read Chapter 1 and those following, please refer to the chapter links in the Related Articles column on the left. If you agree with Mrs. Briggs on the need to continue the work of The National Humane Education Society (NHES), consider making a donation! On behalf of the animals, we thank you. Sincerely, NHES Humane Education & Advocacy Staff *Please note that since 1990 some of the information in For the Love of Animals has changed. Updated information has been added in brackets. However, the words and sentiments remain Mrs. Briggs’. |
