Ringworm in Dogs

What Is Ringworm?

Ringworm is a fungal skin infection that can affect dogs, cats, and humans.
Despite its name, it is not caused by a worm.

Signs of Ringworm in Dogs

  • Circular areas of hair loss
  • Red, scaly, or crusty skin
  • Broken or brittle hair
  • Mild itching (some dogs show no symptoms)

Some dogs may carry ringworm without visible signs.

How Ringworm Spreads

  • Direct contact with an infected animal
  • Contact with contaminated items such as leashes, bedding, clothing, hands, or surfaces

The fungus can survive on surfaces if not properly cleaned.

Can Humans Get Ringworm?

Yes. Ringworm is zoonotic, meaning it can spread from animals to humans.
In people, it commonly appears as a red, circular, itchy rash and is treatable.

How to Protect Yourself

After handling dogs, please:

  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water
  • Avoid touching your face before washing
  • Change and wash clothing after contact
  • Disinfect personal items as needed
