Compromise for Beavers and Humans to Coexist - National Humane Education Society

Paws Up! The DAMS for Beavers Act, introduced by Representative Suzan DelBene, provides a solution for humans and beavers to live together harmoniously.

January 24, 2023

Beavers and humans are working to live symbiotically. Currently, beavers are unknowingly causing damage to people’s property by using their natural instincts to create dams. Representative Suzan DelBene introduced H.R. 9501: Developing Alternative Mitigation Systems for Beavers Act or the DAMS for Beavers Act, on December 13, 2022. This bill would put in place a grant program to aid projects that use nonlethal coexistence measures to reduce conflicts with beavers and property damage. The aim is to reduce property damage caused by beavers and maintain beaver’s natural habitats.

A condition of the grant is to use only nonlethal coexistence measures. According to a press release, these nonlethal coexistence measures are more long-term, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. Some examples of these measures are shielding trees with mesh fencing or coating the tree trunks with a combination of paint and sand, installing water flow control devices, and adding fencing.

Beavers naturally play an essential role in combatting climate change and creating wetland habitats for plants and wildlife. According to an article, dams create fire protection and defense against droughts and flooding. They have even received the label “climate-solving heroes.” When using lethal measures to solve this beaver and property battle, not only do the beavers suffer, the planet does too. The DAMS for Beavers Act protects infrastructure, beavers, and the environment.

Any legislation that protects wildlife should be supported…we share this planet with them & they serve a purpose in nature that cannot be replaced.
