House Resolution 752 Urges China To Stop Yulin Dog Meat Festival - National Humane Education Society

Pawspawsup Up!

To the sponsors of H. Res. 752, to condemn the slaughter and consumption of dogs in China.

The Lychee and Dog Meat Festival has taken place each year since about 2009 in Yulin, China. Commonly referred to as the “Yulin Dog Meat Festival,” the event was organized byyulin the restaurant industry to boost dwindling sales of dog meat under the guise of reviving ‘cultural tradition’. The festival is responsible for the death and slaughter of about 10,000 dogs each summer. Some of the dogs are raised in miserable conditions – others are abducted, strays, or stolen pets who are beaten to death, and possibly skinned alive before being cooked for the festival. Because China has no laws protecting animal welfare, the sickening abuses which make up the Yulin Dog Meat Festival cannot be prosecuted as crimes in China.

There is no place on earth for the systematic torture and killing of dogs in the 21st century.  H. Res 752 is a new resolution introduced by the U.S. House of Representatives that would make our nation’s stance clear:

“That the House of Representatives—

(1) condemns the Dog Meat Festival in Yulin because it—

(A) is a spectacle of extreme animal cruelty;
(B) is a commercial activity claimed by proponents to be in the name of tradition, but is not actually grounded in Chinese history;
(C) is opposed by a majority of the Chinese people; and
(D) threatens global public health;
(2) urges the Government of China and the Yulin authorities to enforce the 2011 Agriculture Ministry of China Regulation on the Quarantine of Dogs at the Place of Origin that requires one certificate for one dog who is on board a trans-provincial transport truck;
(3) encourages the Government of China and the Yulin authorities to enforce China’s food safety laws regulating the processing and sale of animal products;
(4) urges the Government of China and the Yulin authorities to impose a ban on the killing and eating of dogs as part of Yulin’s festival;
(5) urges the National People’s Congress of China to enact an animal anti-cruelty law with provisions banning the dog meat trade; and
(6) affirms the commitment of the United States to the protection of animals and to the progress of animal protection around the world.”

Take action: Contact your representatives and urge them to support H. Res. 752 condemning the killing and consumption of dogs.

  3. Amy Ginkel says:

    The means by which they kill these innocent companion animals is horrific to say the least. They believe the more pain they inflict on the animals the more tender the meat. The dogs & cats suffer immensely as they watch others be tortured and killed. This is not a cultural thing. These people are savages that like to inflict pain and suffering on innocent animals. Shut it down now!

  4. Riaz Mian says:

    Dogs are God’s companionship gift to mankind….. They are a blessing and should be loved and cared for not harmed.

  7. Cathryn Fritz says:

    The Yulin Festival is an event that tortures and consumes dogs. The comments from the people inside the festival are comments such as “The more they suffer the better they taste”. I don’t even know how to wrap my head around this. The Yulin Festival needs to be illegal and anyone participating should be incarcerated.

  8. Jack woods says:

    Why is this still allowed to happen?! It is a worldwide embarrassment to the country of China! It is the Government’s responsibility to end this immediately and the US and UK governments should cease all trading with them until they do! Vile. Cruel. Unnecessary.

  9. Jamie says:

    How is this allowed? It’s animal cruelty, they are beaten to death! , Lefted suffering , or cooked alive! It’s sick and demented!! Dogs, and cats are domestic animals, pets! I can’t even comprehend eating a dog ! And the suffering, the barbaric way of dying ..is inhumane,. This needs stopped !

  10. Beverly Morin says:

    This miserable barbaric tradition must cease. The terror these animals experience is unspeakable. I appeal to the Chinese government to move powerfully to put a stop to this tradition of torture and torment of these defenseless animals.
