Home should conjure up feelings of security and comfort but to the courageous women living in women’s shelters that is not the case. Having to choose between one’s own safety or the companionship of beloved Gidget should not be a factor. According to the Animal Welfare Institute, there are currently 1,431 safe places for abuse victims and their pets to stay in the United States. The PAWS Act (H.R. 1258) would help protect victims’ beloved companions from harm from their abusers and would also provide funding for shelters to accommodate their companion animals. Companion animals are a great sense of comfort during traumatic experiences.
