Update: The PIGS Act Has Been Reintroduced! - National Humane Education Society

Paws Up! Congresswoman Veronica Escobar has reintroduced legislation to increase animal welfare for pregnant pigs.

May 24, 2023

It is heartening news that the Pigs In Gestation Stalls Act of 2023, or the PIGS Act of 2023, has been reintroduced. Last year, the bill was introduced as the PIGS Act of 2022. Congresswoman Veronica Escobar introduced H.R. 2939: PIGS Act of 2023 on April 27, 2023. This new bill has identical requirements to amend the Animal Welfare Act as the former bill, the PIGS Act of 2022.

This bill gives pregnant pigs ample room to move around freely, including standing up, laying down, and turning around fully. These seem like the most basic of animal needs, right? Sadly, pregnant pigs kept in these gestation stalls do not have these basic needs met. The PIGS Act of 2023 would increase the square footage requirement to at least 24 square feet. As quoted from Veronica Escobar’s press release, “Pigs are sentient beings that feel pain and suffering. They are sensitive, gentle, and smart creatures that are treated with incredible cruelty before they are sent to be slaughtered.”

Currently, ten states have restrictions on the use of gestation stalls. These states include Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio, Oregon, and Rhode Island. There has been some recent pushback on Proposition 12 in California, but triumphantly, the Supreme Court upheld the ban on gestation crates. The PIGS Act would guarantee that all pregnant pigs in the United States have adequate space and a higher standard of living.

Please have this act pass because these female pigs need room with being pregnant. They have feeling too

Please help these poor female pigs to have plenty
of room for them and their sweet little babies.
They should be respected too. God made and loves them too. He breathed air into their lungs just like he did yours. Be Human and have some compassion.
