Paws Up!
To U.S. District Judge Amy Totenberg for upholding the NOAA decision to deny the Georgia Aquarium’s request to import whales from Russia.
How many of you have visited an aquarium and stood motionless watching Beluga Whales glide through the water effortlessly?
These beautiful creatures have been coined “canaries of the sea.” According to a recent news story, the Georgia Aquarium wanted to diversify their captive whales’ gene pool by obtaining 18 Beluga Whales from Russia. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) denied the aquarium a permit to import the whales on the premise that it would negatively impact the wild pod of whales they were to be captured from. The aquarium then filed a lawsuit against NOAA. Upon reviewing all of the information, U.S. District Judge Amy Totenberg upheld NOAA’s decision to deny the importation of the whales from Russia.
