DIY Cat Scratcher

Here is an activity you can do with your children or friends that doesn’t require spending much money and is a great way to help your local animal shelter or rescue.

Materials Needed: Cardboard, Glue, Ruler, Pen, Utility Knife, Tape (optional)

1. For the base of the cat scratcher, use a shoebox top, other small top, or the bottom of a small box. (The height of the cat scratcher base should be 1″-2″ tall. If you are using a small box, cut to the desired height, and reinforce the bottom with tape.)

2. Once you have chosen your desired size, start measuring your strips using your ruler and pen. (Make sure when you are measuring that the corrugated part of the cardboard will be facing up and running the length of the box.)

3. Position the cardboard on a protected surface. (A 2×4 board is helpful.) Start cutting strips using a utility knife.

4. After all of your strips have been cut, you can start gluing. (Make sure the bottom of each strip lines up with the other while gluing or the strips won’t fit into the base properly.

5. Once all of the strips have been glued together, glue them to the base.

6. Let dry and donate to deserving felines waiting for their forever homes!
