Salt Lake County in UT Prohibits Sale of Puppies in Pet Stores - National Humane Education Society

To the County Commissioners of Salt Lake County Commission for stopping the sale of commercially-bred puppies, kittens, and rabbits in pet stores.

According to a recent news article, pet stores and other retail establishments in Salt Lake County, Utah will be prohibited from selling puppies, kittens, and rabbits. The ordinance, introduced by Commissioner Arlyn Bradshaw, aims to stop the flow of cash from pet stores to puppy mills that dog-280332_1920supply animal “inventory.” The ordinance further helps homeless animals in Salt Lake County by allowing pet stores to showcase shelter animals available for adoption on-site at retail locations. Consumers who insist on purchasing dogs, cats, and rabbits can still legally purchase animals from private breeders.

Take action: Salt Lake County residents, contact your county commission and thank them for passing this important ordinance to combat puppy mills. Residents of other areas, contact your city council or county commission and urge them to consider an ordinance that would ban or restrict the retail sale of companion animals.
