Florida Residents to Vote on Banning Greyhound Racing by 2020 - National Humane Education Society

Paws Up!

To the Florida State Supreme Court for voting to uphold the decision to keep Amendment 13 on the ballots for the November election, which would free greyhounds from the terrible trade of greyhound racing.

9/26/18

Greyhound racing has long been a pastime for gamblers in America—beginning over one hundred years ago. Since then, it has done nothing but pad the pockets of ruthless handlers and lucky bidders, while the source of their income—the dogs themselves—suffer, voiceless. Greyhounds who are bred into the racing industry must endure extreme physical conditioning when not cramped in crates barely large enough to stand or turn around in. Many suffer from preventable diseases and tick or flea infestations because their handlers refuse to vaccinate or medicate them.  When they do not run fast enough, they are given performance-enhancing drugs, such as Oxycodone, steroids, and even cocaine. When they can no longer run, some are lucky enough to be adopted into loving homes, while others are often abandoned or euthanized.

Over 400 greyhounds have died at Florida race tracks since 2013.

Florida lawmakers have had enough of the abuse and exploitation of greyhound dogs. Amendment 13, which would ban commercial dog racing by the year 2020, will be voted upon by the citizens of Florida on November 6th, 2018, thanks to the Florida Supreme Court. Opponents of the ban argued that the language of the bill was misleading to voters and wanted it removed from the ballot, as well as concerns about the loss of revenue for the state. However, the court ruled in support of the ban, stating that voters will be able to understand the wording just fine, and that while greyhound racing would be banned, no other gambling activities would be affected.

Take Action: Florida residents, the outcome of these dogs’ lives are in your hands! Be sure to vote YES on Amendment 13 in your state’s general elections on November 6th to put an end to greyhound racing in Florida!

I hope the floridians will come to their senses and stop another money driven event that abuses and kills innocent dogs for their entertainment…. those who promote things like this are very dark , heartless souls and need to step back and take a long look at their actions….

tell these people to get there big butts up and race themselves.Leave these animals to live good lives as they should.Shame on Florida and any other states that use animals for their entertainment.

  3. Diane Lilly says:

I agree, dog racing is abusive and those involved should all be fired and find real jobs where no one is hurt or killed.

  4. Linda says:

Cars are for racing! NOT DOG’S! I say stop greyhound racing and let these dogs be dogs and run not race after a ball that is thrown for them to fetch!!

what are they for to end the dog racing by 2020? That’s too long and dogs are still going to be killed and abused til that time. If they’re going to pass a bill and end the racing, it should be within 1 year, not 2 years. There’s too much time for corruptiveness to continue and lives to be lost. They need to “shake a leg” and move faster.

      Eileen,

Thank you so much for your comment. Yes, these facilities have until January of 2020 (a little over a year) to phase out greyhound racing. Though we wish that all of the suffering could end today, for good, we will take this as a positive step in the right direction. Let’s hope- for the dogs’ sake- that it be sooner rather than too late.
