To the state of Illinois for enacting higher penalties for pet owners who fail to protect their animals from extreme weather conditions.
According a to a recent news article, pet owners who expose dogs and cats to life-threatening situations for prolonged periods of time in extreme heat or cold will now face Class A misdemeanor charges. These charges are punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500. However, judges could impose lighter sentences upon their discretion. The new law went into effect January 1, 2016.
Pets left outside in extreme hot or cold face life-threatening conditions that including: heat stroke, hypothermia, and frostbite. While age, body mass, and overall health play a factor, any animal can succumb to these traumas.
