San Antonio, Texas, Is Slowly Making a Better Place for Chained Dogs - National Humane Education Society

Paws Up!
October 18, 2017

To city council members in San Antonio, TX, for trying to make a better place for chained dogs in the community by banning the use of chains.

According to a recent news article, council members in San Antonio, Texas, have passed a restriction to ban the use of chains while tethering dogs outside.  The issue of banning this type of tether was addressed because of the health concerns it posed to dogs after their excrement became lodged in the links.  Council members previously debated the issue of an anti-tethering law, but decided against it, due to the poor communities in the area where tethered dogs are common.  They determined that roaming dogs would increase creating a greater risk to people in the community.

Dear {Council Member’s Name},

I am a concerned resident of San Antonio, Texas, and dog lover.  I care for the well-being of dogs who are continuously tethered outside.  These canine companions may face a lifetime of isolation, risk from the elements, and harm from other animals.  Restricting the type of tether used to confine our canine companions to one spot is a small step in the right direction to help end their suffering.  Please continue to support legislation that would ban the use of tethers all together.  Thank you for your time and effort to create a more humane world for animals to live in.

Sincerely,

{Your Name}
