To the Santa Fe County sheriff’s deputies for speaking out against continuous dog-tethering.dogs-chained

Throughout the United States, lawmakers are becoming aware of the problems that arise when dogs are continuously tethered, or chained outdoors for days, months, and even years on end. In response, anti-tethering laws are becoming increasingly common in cities and counties throughout the country.  Currently, 21 states have some form of anti-tethering law.

According to a recent news article, the Santa Fe County Commission in New Mexico voted on an ordinance concerning the continuous tethering of dogs outside. Sadly, the ordinance that was written by Santa Fe’s sheriff’s deputies did not pass. However, the Santa Fe County Commission is expected to re-vote on the ordinance after revisions. The ordinance would have required the direct supervision of a dog while it was tethered outside. Someone found guilty of violating the ordinance would have faced a misdemeanor charge with a fine up to $300, jail time up to 90 days, or both.
