To Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) for introducing the Orca Responsibility and Care Advancement Act (ORCA) to protect Orca’s from living in captivity.

Before 2013, SeaWorld was the place children longed to visit to see the powerful and mystifying killer whales known as orcas. whale-243920_1920People sat in awe as these powerful creatures would perform tricks for audiences with the mere sound of a whistle and a hand motion. After beholding such an inspiring sight, many may dream to teach these powerful beings with a whistle and motion of their own. But the stark reality of the orcas existence in SeaWorld came to light in 2013 with the documentary, Blackfish. Since then the magic of the show has dissolved and SeaWorld has been under the microscope blanketed with doubt. Representative Adam Schiff is one of the many advocates for these wild sea creatures. In a recent news article, Representative Adam Schiff discussed the details of the ORCA Act stating that, “Orcas do not belong in captivity. They are too socially complex, too intelligent, too long-lived and simply too big to thrive in confinement. This bill would phase out captive orcas so that their display ends with this generation.” With this bill hanging in the balance and SeaWorld’s attractiveness plummeting, SeaWorld has announced that by 2017, the company will no longer host their orca show. This federal legislative bill will protect the future of orcas so that they can live out their existence “free” in the vast ocean the way Mother Nature intended.
