Legislators In Maine Petition for LD 1442 to Be the Voice for Animals in Cruelty Cases - National Humane Education Society

Update: LD 1442 became law on January 12, 2020.

May 14, 2019
Paws Up! To Representative Donna Bailey (D–14th District) in Maine for sponsoring LD 1442 to help animals during cruelty cases.

Animal cruelty is abhorrent, and it is against the law. Laws to help prosecute animal cruelty offenders are gaining ground throughout the United States. Recently, Virginia’s Governor Northam passed Tommie’s Law to increase a convicted abusers penalty to a Class 6 felony. Sadly, most times, the punishment does not fit the crime.

According to a recent news article, Representative Donna Bailey has sponsored LD 1442 to help give animals in Maine a fighting chance at justice. LD 1442, also known as Franky’s Law, was created after a Boston Terrier-Pug Mix was tragically killed after a home robbery. LD 1442 would allow students, who are chosen by the court, from the University of Maine’s School of Law to monitor these cases in the “interest of justice.” This would give law students LD 1442’s passage would help pave the way to increase the protection for animals who have no voice.

Take Action: Maine residents, contact your representative to show your support that LD 1442 be passed to help get justice for animals who have suffered at the cruel hands of abusers.
