The FDA Modernization Act 2.0 was introduced in the Senate and passed by unanimous consent on September 29, 2022! It is a bipartisan act introduced by Senators Corey Booker and Rand Paul. S. 5002: FDA Modernization Act 2.0 is an amendment to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA). This act allows manufacturers and sponsors to use alternate testing methods to animal testing.

Some alternatives to animal testing listed are cell-based assays, organ chips, microphysiological systems, computer models, and animal testing. Sadly, animal testing is still on the list to use when deemed appropriate by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Animal testing to benefit humans has been around for 83 years since FDCA was passed.  Throughout that time, 90%-95% of drugs that pass animal testing fail when tried on humans, according to a recent news article.

The FDA Modernization Act 2.0 is an exciting step to end the testing on animals. It will ensure that significantly fewer tests are done on animals, but the fight against animal testing continues. Senator Booker in a recent press release said, “This legislation brings us one step closer to eliminating the cruel practice of unnecessary animal testing.” Let us hope that this act has a wave of legislation against animal testing coming behind it.

I am thankful that the Senate passed the bill and pray that the house will also pass it and the president sign it. They need to stop inhumane treatment of animals for no reason and use alternate methods now.

  2. Sedera Jeansonne says:

There is no reason for animal testing any longer. There are more appropriate alternatives to research and test that would more than likely be more effective than animal testing. Stop the cruel and inhumane testing and experiments on all of these innocent animals. It’s what the majority of human beings want.
