NYC Is Pioneering The Way To Monitor Animal Welfare

Paws Up!
December 13, 2019

To New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio for signing a bill to create an animal welfare office.

The passage of animal welfare legislation, throughout the United States, can be an arduous one–taking years to pass or never being heard. New York City Councilmember Justin Brannan (D-District 43), an avid advocate for animal welfare, wants to change that. Last month, he introduced legislation to create an office specifically to oversee animal welfare issues. Councilmember Brannan quoted Mahatma Gandhi saying, “They say the greatness of a society and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio agreed and signed the bill. The passage of this bill is a significant milestone for New York City, making it the first city ever to have such an office. Mayor de Blasio has not yet determined who will staff the office. What a great day this is for the animals of New York City!

Take Action: New Yorkers contact Mayor de Blasio and thank him for passing this bill that will help to create a more humane world for the animals who live there.
