Utah University Teaches Students How to Run a No-Kill Shelter - National Humane Education Society

Starting this January, students at Southern Utah University will have the opportunity to learn how to open and operate a no-kill animal shelter.

This new certification will require students to complete coursework that will prepare them to open their own animal shelter as well as teach them how to operate a no-kill animal facility. Students will have the opportunity to visit a local animal shelter while completing the coursework. This certification is the first of its kind, and the university hopes to expand the program into a bachelor’s or master’s degree in animal services in the future.

As more animal shelters adopt the no-kill philosophy, more animals are getting second chances than ever before. With humane education becoming more prevalent in school classrooms and curriculums, students are entering college with a wider knowledge of animal care and how animals should be treated.
