Hawaii Will Soon Join Growing List of States Banning Animal-Tested Cosmetics

Paws Up! To Hawaii State Legislature for passing HB 1088!

May 7, 2021

On April 30th, 2021, the Hawaiian State Legislature voted in favor of HB 1088, The Hawaii Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act. Once this bill takes effect, it would ban the sale of any cosmetics testing on animals. According to the bill text, “Today, modern approaches that are cheaper, faster, and more reliable at predicting adverse human reactions are widely available and are becoming more accessible each year.” The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetics (FD&C) Act does not even require animal testing on cosmetics, so there is no reason the suffering of animals should continue. California, Nevada, Illinois, and most recently Virginia have all made the pledge to stop accepting cruelty in their cosmetics.

No living, breathing, sentient being should suffer or be put to death in the name of science. While our government requires animal testing for some substances, much of animal testing is a mere replication of what has been done for decades. Today, many companies have produced non-animal related testing devices, such as simulators and computer models and use human tissue to test products meant to be used on humans. Testing the effects of a product or procedure on an animal does grave harm to the animal and often does not produce results useful to protect human lives.
